Transform a Brassy Wig Into a Stunning Hair Piece
One of the best things about human hair wigs is that they can be styled in many different ways. You can curl them, straighten them, and even dye them. Unlike synthetic hair, dyeing natural hair can absorb regular hair dye, making the process simpler and more versatile. This means that you can change your look as often as you like without damaging your hair. However, it’s important to note that not all wigs are created equal. Fortunately, there are a few simple tricks that you can use to transform a brassy wig into a stunning hair piece. In this blog post, I’m going to share with you two of my favourite methods for banishing brassiness and giving your wig a beautiful, natural-looking colour.
Method #1: Toning the Wig with Normal Hair Dye and Colour Correcting Products
One of the easiest ways to banish brassiness is to tone the wig with colour correcting products. This can be done using either purple shampoo or purple hair toner. When dealing with synthetic fibres, it is important to use fabric dye specifically formulated for synthetic materials. Fabric dye is necessary because it adheres to synthetic fibres, which are essentially plastic filaments, ensuring the colour sticks and shows up on the hair. Purple shampoo and hair toner are both colour correcting products that neutralize unwanted yellow and orange tones in the hair. However, when you dye synthetic hair extensions, traditional hair dyes are typically ineffective and can damage the synthetic fibres, making it crucial to understand the composition of the extensions and use appropriate methods.
To use purple shampoo or hair toner on your wig, simply wet the wig and apply the product evenly throughout. Once you’ve applied the product, let it sit for 5-10 minutes before rinsing it out thoroughly with cool water. I like to do this method once a week to keep my wig looking its best.
Method #2: Colouring the Wig With Semi-Permanent Hair Dye
Another great way to get rid of brassiness is to colour the wig with semi-permanent hair dye. However, using normal hair dye on synthetic wigs can be challenging. Synthetic wigs cannot absorb normal hair dye and require specific dyes made for fabrics. This method is super easy—simply choose a semi-permanent hair dye in the shade that you want (I usually go for something 1-2 shades lighter than my natural hair colour), and use it to colour your wig according to the instructions on the box. Dyeing synthetic hair extensions involves verifying the composition of the hair and may require professional assistance for drastic colour changes.
Maintaining dyed synthetic hair is crucial for longevity. How often you wash synthetic hair significantly impacts the dye’s durability. Washing with warm water can easily remove the colour, so careful maintenance is needed to keep your synthetic hair looking vibrant.
I like using semi-permanent hair dye because it’s gentle on the hair and it doesn’t require any special tools or equipment. Plus, it’s very inexpensive, which is always a bonus in my book! I typically colour my wig every 4-6 weeks, but you may need to do it more often if you have particularly brassy hair.
Conclusion: There you have it—two simple methods for banishing brassiness and giving your wig a beautiful, natural-looking colour. Try one (or both!) of these methods today, and I guarantee that you’ll be happy with the results.
Top Tip
Invest in a good wig stand. A good wig stand will help extend the life of your wig by keeping it from getting tangled or matted. We recommend purchasing a stand that is specifically designed for wigs so that it cradles the hair and doesn’t put too much pressure on any one area. A good wig stand will also help your wig retain its shape and style between washes. Also a shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for with hair is a must.
